Phillip M. Saunders

Phillip M. Saunders, QC, is an Associate Professor at the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, former Dean of Law and Weldon Professor of Law (2005–2010), and Director of the Marine & Environmental Law Institute. Since 2016, he has also been Adjunct Research Professor, National Institute for South China Sea Studies, Haikou, China. His teaching and research interests include public international law, law of the sea, fisheries law, and maritime boundary delimitation. He was previously Senior Policy Advisor and Field Representative, South Pacific, with the International Centre for Ocean Development, delivering ocean development programmes in regions that included the South Pacific, Caribbean, and Indian Ocean, and he has served as a District Officer and rural development planner in the Government of Botswana. He has advised governments in Canada, the Caribbean, South Pacific, and the Indian Ocean on the law of the sea and ocean development, and was counsel for Nova Scotia in the Nova Scotia–Newfoundland and Labrador maritime boundary arbitration.
