Joshua Barath

Joshua Barath is a professor in the Community Safety department at Georgian College teaching across various programs including the Honours Bachelor of Police Studies degree, Police Foundations and Community and Justice Services diploma programs. Most recently Joshua has undertaken a PhD in Justice and Behavioural Sciences focusing upon the development of public safety initiatives through the application of smart technologies and data driven analysis combined with human behavior based knowledge and understanding.

Prior to working in the field of academics, he spent nearly 10 years working within the correctional industry. This included working within institutional corrections at secure custody and open custody facilities, as well as treatment centres with high risks/needs clients. Joshua has also worked within Community Corrections as a youth Probation officer, a Case worker in an Alternative to Custody community based program working with high risk and special offender populations, a community liaison within the Mental Health Therapeutic Courts, and as a Programming and Training Coordinator for a non-profit organization that managed and operated federal halfway house facilities, diversion based programs, community alternatives, and restorative justice practices.

Further to these industry and academic career based experiences, Joshua has assisted in the development of multi-agency partnerships with the vision to improve community well-being, safety and security through joint identification, analysis, response and evaluation processes. He has presented at several local, regional, provincial and national conferences on topics ranging from experiential learning opportunities in post-secondary education, the use of technology in the classroom as innovative means for teaching and learning, as well as practical applications of technologies and crime prevention in the field of law enforcement.
