Exam Preparation; Paralegal

The Ontario paralegal licensing exam is a 7-hour open-book exam composed of approximately 240 multiple-choice questions. The exam questions are designed to assess a candidate’s competence in a variety of subject areas, including Canadian law, civil litigation, criminal/quasi-criminal law, administrative law, litigation process, ADR, practice management, and ethical and professional responsibility.

Students who have registered to write the paralegal licensing exam will receive study materials from the LSO 6 to 8 weeks before their exam. These materials are approximately 1000 pages in length, and they contain all the information required to pass the exam. Students must independently study and learn this material to prepare for the exam, and many students create additional reference materials such as indexes and summaries. Students have a total of three attempts to pass the exam.

As you begin preparing for the Ontario paralegal licensing exam, you will likely have many questions about how to study effectively, what types of reference materials and study aids you’ll need, and what to expect on exam day. The Comprehensive P1 Exam Preparation Manual was written to help answer these questions and walk you through the exam preparation process from start to finish.
