Jay Merchant
Prior to migrating to Australia in 2010, Jay had a background in the Canadian oil and gas industry. He relocated on a Distinguished Talent Visa after being recruited and supported by both the Winter Olympic Institute of Australia and the Australian Curling Federation. He is a World Championship curler and continues to represent Australia at national and international sporting events.
Jay completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Lethbridge, focusing on political science. He then went on to earn a Juris Doctor, a Master’s Degree in Business Law, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from Bond University in Australia.
Jay previously served as a sworn police officer in Queensland, performing Sergeant and Senior Sergeant duties during his eight-year tenure. He resigned from the Queensland Police Service in 2022 and joined the private bar, where he maintains a nationwide practice in criminal law, domestic violence, migration, sports law, disciplinary tribunals, and inquests.
He is also an Assistant Professor of Law at Bond University, where he coordinates courses in Foundations of Canadian Law, Canadian Constitutional Law, Canadian Criminal Law, and Australian Evidence Law.
