Garry D. Watson

Garry D. Watson, LLB (Melbourne), LLM (Yale), is an emeritus professor at Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, Toronto, and has been a visiting professor at various universities including the University of Southern California, University of Toronto, and Duke University law schools. He has taught class actions at Osgoode for the past eight years. In addition, he has taught seminars in comparative class actions at Haifa University Law School, University of Sydney Law School, Monash University Law School (Prato, Italy, campus), and University of Melbourne Law School.

Professor Watson served as a member of the Class Proceedings Committee from 1997 to 2000. He was in private practice for two years in the mid-1980s and he was the full-time director of professional development at Blake, Cassels & Graydon from 1991 to 1993 and subsequently continued in that position part-time. He is also the co-author of several books on Canadian civil procedure: Watson & McGowan, Ontario Civil Practice, Holmested & Watson, Ontario Civil Procedure (6 volumes), and Watson, Bogart, Hutchinson, Mosher, Pinos & Walker, The Civil Litigation Process: Cases and Materials. Watson has been awarded the Law Society Medal for the Law Society of Upper Canada, as well as the Samuel E. Gates Litigation Award by the American College of Trial Lawyers and the David Mundell Medal for outstanding contribution to the law through legal writing. He was counsel to the Ontario Civil Procedure Revision Committee from 1976 to 1980 and was a member of the Ontario Civil Rules Committee from 1983 to 2005.
