Payam Akhavan
Payam Akhavan, LLB (Osgoode), LLM SJD (Harvard), is a Full Professor at McGill University Faculty of Law, with prior appointments at Yale Law School, University of Toronto, European University Institute (Florence), Université Paris Ouest (Nanterre La Défense), and Oxford University. He is a Member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration and the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) Panel of Arbitrators, and he served as the first Legal Advisor to the Prosecutor’s Office of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia at The Hague (1994–2000), having also served with the UN in Bosnia, Cambodia, Guatemala, Rwanda, and Timor Leste. He has appeared as counsel before the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, the European Court of Human Rights, and the Supreme Courts of Canada and the United States. In 2017, he delivered the CBC Massey Lectures In Search of a Better World: A Human Rights Odyssey.
