Shafik Bhalloo
Shafik Bhalloo K.C., is senior counsel at Kornfeld LLP, prior to which he was a partner for 25 years. He is a Professor of Practice at the Beedie School of Business at Simon Fraser University, and former Academic Director of Beedie’s Business Minor program. Shafik's practice is focused on commercial and civil litigation, labour and employment law, and human rights law, and he has litigated multi-party commercial/corporate and securities cases. He has also prosecuted and defended a wide range of claims including personal injury, insurance, and real estate, while in his labour and employment practice he has represented large and small companies in matters such as grievances, collective bargaining, and certification applications.
He received his law degree from the University of British Columbia in 1989 and his Master of Laws degree with a focus on e-Business from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2004. With an emphasis on courses in commercial law, business ethics, and employment law, he is a two-time recipient of the TD Canada Trust Distinguished Teaching Award, Beedie’s highest teaching honour. In 2022, Shafik received the honorary title of King’s Counsel (KC), which recognizes British Columbia lawyers for exceptional contributions to the profession. In addition, he has authored numerous peer reviewed articles in law and ethics journals, and has sat as an adjudicator on British Columbia’s Employment Standards Tribunal since 2008.
