Stephen M. Waddams
Stephen M. Waddams (1942-2023) was Goodman/Schipper Professor of Law, University of Toronto, and University Professor, was a graduate of the University of Toronto (B.A. 1963, LL.B.,1967), Cambridge University (B.A.,1965, M.A.,1969, Ph.D.,1994), and the University of Michigan (LL.M., 1968; S.J.D., 1972), and a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He was a visiting fellow at Jesus College, Oxford, 1981-2, All Souls College, Oxford, 1988, and Clare Hall, Cambridge, 1996. He was awarded the title of university professor by the University of Toronto in 2005. He was the author of about 100 published articles, notes, reviews and essays, mainly on contract law, and of the following books: Products Liability (Carswell: fifth edition, 2010); The Law of Contracts (Canada Law Book Co: sixth edition, 2010); The Law of Damages (Canada Law Book Co); Introduction to the Study of Law (Carswell: seventh edition, 2010); Law, Politics and the Church of England: the Career of Stephen Lushington 1782-1873 (Cambridge University Press, 1992), Sexual Slander in Nineteenth-century England: Defamation in the Ecclesiastical Courts, 1815-1855 (University of Toronto Press, 2000); Dimensions of Private Law: Categories and Concepts in Anglo-American Legal Reasoning (Cambridge University Press, 2003); and Principle and Policy in Contract Law: Competing or Complementary Concepts? (Cambridge University Press, 2011).
